Drive to Grand Canyon from Las vegas or take a tour?? whats safer?

I took the bus trip from Planet Hollywood before dawn and had a terrific time at the Grand Canyon arriving back in Las Vegas at around 7pm. The trip included a buffet lunch stop. The price was reasonable, I think less than $80.
