Is visiting the Grand Canyon really worth it?

I have always wanted to go see it...but honestly, is it one of those things where you spend a lot of time and money to get there, and then you feel a little underwhelmed? Is it just something where you look and go, "Okay, I've seen it," and then you're done? Or is there stuff to explore? Is it too touristy to be truly a great experience?
