The number of Jews who survived the Holocaust has grown from 1.6 to 3.5m, so why does the 6m figure endure?

Since the nazis disposed of jews in a cruel fashion I can imagine counting the number of deaths would be difficult. They usually make rough estimations when it comes to number of deaths in such a high scale.
